Midterm Review Questions

Make sure that you can answer and do all of the following before the midterm exam:

1. Can you find a newgroup posting on a company?
2. Can you identify the domain and URL if given an example?
3. Can you identify the homepage URL if given a webpage URL?
4. Can you post a link to your BLOG?
5. Can you find a current stock price for a company on yahoo finance?
6. Can you find information in Wikipedia?
7. Can you log into the subscription databases of Miami Dade College and find information in the Hoovers database?
8. Can you rewrite an email so that it conforms to the rules of Netiquette?
9. Can you give me an example of an open resource and an restricted one on the Internet?
10. If I give you a webpage, can you identify all the citation information? (For example: URL, title, homepage, etc.?)

If there is anything you are unclear about, make sure you review and ask for help before next Friday, February 16th.

Important Vocabulary--Key Concepts

Keyword Search

Full-text Search

Narrowing or Limiting a Search

Subscription Database

Open Information= Information found freely on the Internet. Example: Yahoo finance or wikipedia.com

Restricted Information = Information sources on the Internet that require access. Example: Hoovers subscription database on the Miami Dade Website.

Netiquette = Rules for communicating on Internet (subject lines and signatures very important in school/work environment)

Database = A collection of organized data arranged and retrieved by keywords.

Subscription database = A database you have to be a member of to use information

URL=the web address

Domain=the part of the URL that tells you the type of website or information (example: org, com, edu, gov, etc.) This helps you with evaluation.

Homepage=the first page of the website

Website=When you use this word it includes all the webpages of one particular site.

Newsgroups=groups of people on the web where you can find information about current events in a company. They can also be called bulletin boards or discussion groups. You do not subscribe to look at the information.

Blog=an online communication tool for posting information on the Internet.
